Big names missing (and here’s why)

There are some big names missing from this list, such as Hotel Okura Fukuoka, Hilton Fukuoka Sea Hawk, The Grand Hyatt and Hotel Nikko Fukuoka. The reason these (and others) didn’t make the cut here is that none of them achieve a guest rating of 9 or higher. Some don’t even make 8 – which is my usual cut-off limit when shortlisting hotels on Booking.com.

But even though all the hotels included here are 4 or 5-star and rated 9 or higher by guests, there are some very affordable options offering excellent value for money.

Overview of Fukuoka as a luxury destination

Fukuoka, the vibrant capital of Japan’s Kyushu region, has emerged as a premier luxury destination that masterfully blends ancient cultural heritage with contemporary sophistication. As Japan’s fastest-growing city outside Tokyo, Fukuoka has cultivated an impressive collection of high-end accommodations, Michelin-starred restaurants, and exclusive shopping districts, particularly in the bustling Tenjin and serene Ohori areas.

The city’s strategic location as a gateway to Asia has attracted significant international investment, resulting in world-class facilities that add to the city’s reputation as an essential stop when visiting the island of Kyushu.

What sets Fukuoka apart as a luxury destination is its unique ability to offer exclusive experiences while maintaining an intimate, accessible atmosphere that larger Japanese cities often lack.

For example, you can take a private tour with a local exploring Fukuoka’s hidden gems, sample Tenjin’s izakaya culture, a comprehensive walking tour of the Hakata district, take a bicycle trip tracing the history of the city, or savour the region’s celebrated cuisine in intimate high-end restaurants.

The city’s luxury hotels, several of which showcase striking nighttime views of Hakata Bay, have earned international recognition for their impeccable service standards and distinctive fusion of Japanese hospitality with modern luxury amenities.

Why use Booking.com?

Personally speaking, my wife and I now exclusively use Booking.com for our hotel bookings. And that applies irrespective of the country. The only time we don’t use Booking.com is when we book direct with the hotel.

Why might you book direct? The #1 reason we do that is simply because not all the hotels we want to stay at are on Booking.com. The second reason is to get a better price.

However, because of its market position and pulling power, Booking.com can often have better rates than the hotel’s own website, offer more flexible booking and cancellation terms and – if you join their free Genius membership – you will often be shown even cheaper rates exclusively available to Genius members.

You may prefer another platform, and that’s fine – go ahead and stick to what you prefer. But, for us, it’s Booking.com.
