How To Travel In Japan Without Speaking Japanese eBook Rob Dyer

Yoshimune: Authentic Japanese Kitchen Knives

Yoshimune Knives website

For centuries, the art of forging Japanese kitchen knives has been passed down from generation to generation.

Hiroyuki Tazawa, a passionate artisan, established Yoshimune Kitchen Knives to keep this tradition alive and flourishing.

Yoshimune is a Kyoto-based physical store established in March 2020, with an online store that opened in 2021, that works in collaboration with a Japanese maker of knives forged with traditional blacksmith techniques.

They understand that choosing the right Japanese kitchen knife can be overwhelming, especially for those new to this world. Which is why they offer personalized assistance to help you select the best knife. (Take a look at their "How to choose" page to help choose the right knife for you.)

Even better, they offer factory-direct prices and free shipping worldwide.

Japan Travel Tips For When You Don't Speak Japanese

Nanten-en ryokan Amami Osaka The Real Japan Rob Dyer

Japanese as a language contains a lot of what you might politely refer to as unnecessary or extraneous language, phrases and words.

Why use only a few words when a number of paragraphs can say the same thing in four times the amount of time!? 😉

In some languages it might be hazardous to simply nod and say yes to someone speaking to you in their native tongue.

Who knows what you might be agreeing to?

But, in Japanese, you can kind of get away with that. Sometimes.

Let me explain...

Universal Studios Japan: Attraction Closures

USJ Spider-man ride closing

The park announced the immediate demise of two attractions, Terminator 2 3-D and Backdraft, plus the permanent closure from January 2024 of The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man The Ride.

Terminator 2 3-D and Backdraft have been 'in limbo' for three years, as they never reopened after the COVID-19 related closures.

I was at USJ in May last summer and saw the 'temporarily closed' signs at the Terminator attraction but assumed it would reopen at some point.

The news about The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man The Ride was particularly sad to hear. I've been a lifelong fan of Spider-Man, buying the comics as a child in the 1970/80s. And I've ridden that attraction every time I have been to the park since first visiting in 2001. It is such a fun ride, for me the perfect mix of thrills and entertainment.

I'll be updating my Universal Studios Japan: Ultimate Guide shortly with the full details. So check it out if you're planning to include USJ on your next trip.

In the meantime, you can read about all three attractions in my guide:
