Japan Launches Digital Nomad Visa

Takahashi The Real Japan Rob Dyer

Japan is introducing a new 6-month visa specifically for remote workers and digital nomads earning at least ¥10 million - circa £53k/$66k - per year.

The program aims to attract more global talent and further energise Japan's tourism industry.

Eligible remote workers from 49 countries can use the visa to immerse themselves in the country while they work.

The Immigration Services Agency of Japan (ISA) made the announcement last month, and is scheduled to go live this month.

Though the eligibility requirements are stringent, this new visa represents Japan's efforts to attract remote professionals that will also contribute to the wider economy.

In comparison with other nearby Asian countries the visa isn't particularly generous (South Korea's version allows stays up to 2 years with the ability to bring their families along), and the earnings threshold is at the high end of the range offered by other countries.

Still, if you'd like to know more, there's a good piece on the BBC Travel website about the visa HERE.

The Real Japan Community Building Update

2 weeks ago I cleared my calendar for the week so I could focus on getting the first draft of The Real Japan community space built.

Above is a sneak preview.

It went well.

So much so that I worked on it during the 4-day Easter Holiday weekend. (Don't worry, I also made time to eat hot cross buns with my wife. 😋)

Although this was mainly to play around with the basic structure, I made better progress than I expected.

Of course, this is just the bare minimum of my vision for it (see this post for more details on what I have in mind), but I can already see the huge potential.

I will be looking for a handful of 'beta testers' to get early access to the community in exchange for feedback on the user experience, what you'd like to see inside it, etc.

If you think you might be interested in being one of those beta testers drop me a message.
